Council on Interracial Books for Children. Director's files 1954-1984

National organization devoted to creating bias-free textbooks and children's literature by examining material for signs of racism, sexism, and ageism. Bradford Chambers was the director. Bradford Chamber's office files and working papers created during his tenure at the Council consisting of correspondence, notes, drafts for his articles and proposals, and diaries related to his activities at the Council. Correspondence and subject files extensively cover the period from 1968 to 1984. Extensive files on censorship, American Library Association - Social Responsibilities Round Table, and the JAKE AND HONEYBUNCH controversy. Correspondents include Jean Carey Bond, June Jordan, and Piri Thomas.

Author, poet and playwright, Piri Thomas is best known for his autobiography, "Down These Mean Streets" (1967) which deals with his early years growing up in East Harlem, the challenges of his Afro-Puerto Rican/Cuban heritage, and his involvement with drugs and gangs.
